Aprende a escribir bien.

Aprende a hacer preguntas y a pedir ayuda.

Two weeks ago I turned 25, and I can honestly say it was probably one of the best birthdays Ive had t date. Ive always thought theres some birthdays that are more special or important than others (15, 18, 25, 50 and 90, in case youre wondering) mostly because they represent, at least in my personal experience, the stages that have defined in an important way my life or the lives of people around me.

My 15th and 18th birthdays were super low-key and super amazing at the same time. At 15, I had a small barbecue at my house with 6 of the people that even today are some of the most important in my life. At 18 I had a small dinner party with my friends, close family and a few bottles of white rum (hey, I was finally able to drink legally, so I had to celebrate!) Ive never been one for big, ostentatious celebrations, I much rather prefer to enjoy my time with the people I truly love and care about.

At 25, I had the chance to spend my birthday in one of my favorite cities in the world. I walked until my toes bled (okay, not really, but almost), I got to spend time with someone thats super awesome, I spent the whole morning at a museum, I got lost in a 4-floor bookstore, made my own ice-cream and had dinner in a chocolate lovers paradise. So yes, pretty much the best birthday if you ask me.

Writing this has been on my mind since my actual birthday, but for a number of different reasons I hadnt had the guts to sit down and write. Today, I decided to be the ballsy person I usually pride myself in being and started writing. So, here it is. The 25 life lessons that have stuck with me the most throughout my 25 years in this world.

Fold your napkin while you eat.

Dont ask me why, but this is something my dad told me when I was about 5 or 6 and we were having Sunday breakfast at Tacos Bancomer. “Well educated people fold their napkins while they eat instead of balling it up.” Since that day, I always fold my napkins.

Dont be afraid to ask for what you want (or need).

For a very long time I was someone that was ashamed of asking for things. I didnt want people thinking badly of me or thinking I was a bitch for asking for what I needed. Nowadays, I know better and I just ask.

Black can be worn year-round.

This ones pretty obvious, I a big fan of black. More than half of my clothes, shoes and bags are black. Its a timeless classic and matches everything.

Spend time with your family.

They might be stubborn, they might be annoying or terrible close-minded or they might be the best people ever. They might live far away, they might live in the same house. Sadly, grandparents, parents and cousins arent eternal. Spend some of your time with them and enjoy and learn from that shared time.

Drink water.

I used to hate drinking water as a child because I hated the taste. Now, not a day goes by when I dont drink at least 2 liters of water. I honestly dont know how I managed to not die of dehydration.

Wear the right bra size.

Your shoulders and back will thank you when youre older.

The size printed on your clothes is just a number.

Its absolutely not worth the energy to obsess over a number printed on a piece of ribbon.

Keep your friends close and your enemies as far away as possible.

Toxic people wont bring any good to your life, so why have them around? Instead, surround yourself with people who fill your days with smiles, laughter and unconditional support.

If a romantic relationship isnt working, end it.

Same as last point, if someone doesnt bring any good into your life, dont let them have any more of your time. It doesnt matter if its been 5 months, 5 years or 50 years, if youre not happy and theres no way to fix things, ending it is always better.

Chocolate, wine and coffee are the best thing in the world.

No explanation needed here. Cheers!

The only opinion about yourself that should really matter is your own.

The only person that knows you the best is you. Because of this, the only really valid opinion about who you are is none other than yours.

Have clear and strong beliefs and stand my them.

Leaving religions aside, its important that you know exactly what you believe. Do you believe in Gd? Great. You believe in angels and saints? You believe in the Big Bang or in Buddha or in nothing? Great. The important thing is that you know what you stand for and you live your life accordingly.

Makeup is never necessary, but it always provides a good mood boost.

More on that subject here.

Read a lot.

Read about things you like, about things you dont like, about things you dont know. Read in a different language. Read magazines, articles and books. Read whatever you want, but read.

Learn how to write.

Theres few things as awful as an adult with bad spelling.

Dont be afraid to make questions and ask for help.

This one was especially hard for me to understand. Unfortunately, were not all-powerful and know-it-alls. Learning how to ask for help has been one of the things that has helped me grow the most.

No, it doesnt really matter how popular you were in high school.

There is so much more to life than how many friend you had at 16,what the label on your bag says or what neighborhood you live in.

Have crazy, out-there dreams.

Youre never too old to dream big. Its obviously important to stay grounded, but let your imagination run wild and let that be your guide to accomplish great things.

Read the care and wash instruction tags in your clothing.

They are there for a reason.

Stay in the loop with world news (or at least news from your country).

At a certain age it stops being cute to say you dont watch or read the news because theyre boring. Knowing whats going on around you will help you make better decisions for your future.

Leave your comfort zone as many times as you can.

I get it, staying in and watching Netflix every weekend is super comfortable and tempting, clubbing is the worst and sometimes you just wanna stay in your pjs all weekend. Unfortunately, the great stories and experiences rarely happen in the comfort of your living room couch.

Time heals almost all wounds.

Those cliché things our grandmas say are cliché for a reason: theyre true!

Keep your mind, and your heart, open. Learn to tolerate those with different points of view, opinions, sexual orientations, etc. The world would be such a boring and dull place if we were all the same. Learn to let go of your insecurities and allow yourself to fall in love and have feelings.

Laugh at yourself. Constantly.

Dont take yourself too seriously, after all, if you cant laugh at yourself then who can you laugh at? Try to find the tiniest positive in the sea of negativity.

Everything happens in its right time.

We all have different internal clocks, we all have different timelines that work according to how ready we are for each challenge that life presents us. Give it all you have and dont worry if youre 30 and still single, or if youre 28 and considering divorce.
