Let’s make 2021 the year of smart shopping, especially in clothes. But for that, we not only have to look for the best sales but also recognize good quality clothing, so that anything we add to our fresh & detoxed closet, lasts for many seasons.
This does not mean that we have to spend a lot on every single piece we buy. I have found pieces with better quality than others which were more expensive, it is just a matter of paying attention to the following details:
1.-Check the materials on the label. Garments with a higher percentage of natural fibers (cotton, linen, wool, etc.) will always be better than synthetics such as polyester and nylon (unless they are outerwear such as parkas or raincoats) because they last longer. 80% natural, 20% synthetic is a good formula for example.
2.-For cotton, silk, and linen shirts hold the garment against the light and if you cannot see as much through it, it is better quality.
3.-Higher quality garments have more stitches. Try lightly pulling the seams. If you start to see gaps between them, it is not a good sign
4.-If you are going to buy something with embroidery details, check that the color of the fabric under the embroidered area is not visible.
5.-Check that skirts, dresses, and pants have a hem and not only a seam at the end because otherwise, the garment will lose shape with each washing
6.-When trying on the garments, check that the seams do not itch or that there are hanging threads
7.-Details such as covers at the endings of laces, called aglets, extra buttons or buttons that leave space for the fabric (dread chain) indicate that it is a quality garment
8.-If it is a piece with a print, check that the pattern match in bags and joints
9.-When buying jeans, grab the end, flip down and check that seams on the edge. It should have highly finished stitching that can prevent unraveling
